UMBC’s Department of Mechanical Engineering (ME) offers academic programs leading to an ABET-accredited undergraduate degree in Mechanical Engineering, a non-thesis and thesis path to a master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, and the doctoral degree in Mechanical Engineering. The ME Department also hosts graduate certificate programs in Computational Thermal Fluid Dynamics and Mechatronics and both pre-service and in-service Project Lead The Way programs designed to prepare teachers to deliver pre-engineering curriculum in the middle and high school classroom. ME research areas include design and manufacturing of clean and renewable energy systems, integration of environmental sensors with autonomous platforms, thermal-fluid systems involving multiphase fluids and deformable objects, solid mechanics and materials science at the micro and nano scale using experimental and computational techniques, and biomechanics of living tissues.
